Prince George, BC - People with impaired hearing will find Council meetings more accessible now that live video streams of meetings feature closed captioning technology.
To improve the accessibility of Council’s public meetings, the City recently added a closed captioning service that viewers can toggle on and off by clicking the closed captioning “cc” icon in the bottom right corner of their video stream.
Automated captioning for streaming media is a method of displaying a text overlay for spoken content within a video. This service improves accessibility for audiences who may be deaf or who have reduced hearing.
When a viewer turns closed captioning on during the live-streamed webcast, text will appear on the screen below the video. The captioning service is also visible on mobile devices.
The closed captioning is captured through an artificial intelligence (AI) service, which means that at times there may be inaccurate spellings or interpretations of words, depending on the speed, accent, and word pronunciation and enunciation of the speaker.
